Isn’t it still warm in Texas? How about buying some lights for both ends of the bike?

Sorry, I just have bad memories of endless hours in a cold garage on top of rollers. Any length of road, even a dark one (up here we’ve got tons of snow) is better than a trainer.

I gotcha, Jeff. It’s still “warm” here, but riding in the dark is not a viable solution for me. Not gonna happen.

I left work early and went out last evening to try an get a ride in before dark and was only able to put in 1hr. Big letdown.

    Hey Andy,
I stumbled across your blog as I was looking for beginner tips. I’m new to cycling, though I cycled pretty intensly for about a year on a mountain bike with road tires. I’ve recently bought a mid grade bianchi and have started riding again. I just wanted to drop by and say I appreciate your blog and have read quite a bit of it. I look forward to reading it regularly.

I’m in Northern California but am moving to Austin soon. I’m scared of the flatness of Texas. One thing I enjoy out here in the bay area is all the hills. well, take care
    Eli

Thanks Eli. One thing you’ll notice about Austin – it is NOT flat. Go toward the western portions and it is filled with amazing, huge hills. Take care and keep the rubber side down!

    Andy,
Thanks. I’ve never been to Texas, but I’m actually pretty excited for a change. I hear Austin is a great place to cycle and so I imagine my notions of a “flat” Texas are probably incorrect.

I did my second ride today, and boy oh boy did it hurt. Gone are the days when I used to ride 40-60 miles as I’ve ruined my health with abusive behavior for the last six years. I’m extremely happy to be starting up the only sport I truly love once again. I want to say thanks again for your blog. I’ve a long road ahead of me, but my goal is to do the death ride in 2011. 129 miles with 15k feet of climbing.

it’s a long road, but if I keep my head down and pedal, I’ll make it. I was a Marine once, so I know I can get my life back on track.
    take care
    Eli

    @Eli,
Sounds like You’ve got a challenge ahead of you. Take it slow and gradual. The miles will come if you keep it steady. And you’re still a Marine.

You’re right in that much of Texas is flat(ish), but Austin is right up against some of the best hills in Texas; mountains, some of them are. Good luck with the move and thanks for reading.

excuses, excuses, Rutledge. throw your bike in the car and ride long lunches twice a week. that and weekends will keep your trainer to a bare minimum. :)

I think you’re on the right track with your mention of intervals. Beware of junk miles on the trainer.

I have no idea if you’re following a plan but if you’re looking for a variety of interval workouts, the ones here are quite effective: http://www.anaerobicendurance.com
