This was a more painful crash, with a hip pointer and some serious road rash on my inner elbow. Oh, and again with the bruised hands. AUGMENTIN OVER THE COUNTER, Just shoot me now.

Go my tube replaced, chain back on, and then back on the road. We still had a few miles to do, but we just rolled it home at a moderate pace. Mindful of gravel and road edges, of course.

Epilogue

Hey, I can hope right?.

    Man, quite an epic tale! Glad it was only some bruises and scrapes and nothing too serious.

    they ALSO say that if you don’t crash in your training then you’re not trying hard enough. However, in your case i’m sure whomever “they” are, are going to review their aphorisms.

    glad you’re not in a hospital or a prison. take it easy and leave some mistakes for the rest of us.

  3. #3 by Bartek at May 2nd, 2010

    Ouch! That’s gotta hurt! But it could have been worse. Glad that you’re more or less OK.

    I think everybody crashes from time to time. I’ve been training bodybuilding for a couple of years and I still get some bruises from time to time while doing a totally standard workout.

    You think it’s stupid and that it shouldn’t happen to an experienced athlete, but hey… It just will happen once in a while. And I doubt that you can totally eliminate it and still be training honestly hard.

    A bit strange/funny/ironic it happened twice in a row, and you really don’t crash that often. I only recall your encounter with that mad truck (which was probably far more dangerous).

    Also, your beard really paid off!

    Wow…that’s no fun. All it takes is one crash to ruin the feel of an entire ride, and you had two! I had quite a nice crash myself on the mountain bike on Saturday. My grip extension got caught on a sapling and sent me sliding across a series of not-so-soft roots on my hip and shoulder.

    Okay Andy, I have to admit I laughed when I read this, but not about the falls, rather it is the mental picture of you laying on your back yelling at the sky that cracked me up.

    I’m glad you were not seriously hurt, but I’m wondering about your bike, was the flat the only damage?

  6. #6 by Ian at May 3rd, 2010

    I feel your pain and then some, I’m just getting used to clipless pedals on my new (and very nice) moutain bike. Getting my feet on the ground when stationary has been quite a challenge/ordeal.

    I’ve fallen over at roundabouts, on footpaths, and going up very rocky climbs. It became routine to run out of beans, going uphill. Stop, wobble and fall over.

    On more than one occasion I’ve had a sense of humour failure and cut a ride short to go home bleeding. My wife thinks I’m nuts, my friends are trying to talk me out of the clipless pedals.

    However, now, I think I have the worked out. No falls for two weeks now. Except for that one where I hit a log in the dark, oh and the time I went down a hole hidden in the grass. Hardly the fault of the pedals, but more general MTB technique.

    Well, I’ve done it myself (losing it on a gravelly turn) so I had a laugh too. I managed to fill my palms up with gravel – no gloves – but kept my chin off the ground. Nothing like a fall to make you more careful in the future.

    Thanks, all, for the kind expressions of empathy. It’s nice to know that a guy can still cry, “Hey, look at me, I did something and want you all to notice!” and not be ridiculed online. To his face.

    @Eric
    I’ll have you know that I WAS trying hard enough and I did not end up in prison. This time.

    @Bartek
    Yes, my first ever crash(es). The mad truck driver only scared me, but due to my almost inhuman bike-handling abilities I was able to avoid death and stuff. And yes, the beard totally rocks.

    @Jesse T
    Man, you gotta power through them saplings!

    @Bob
    I’m glad my misfortune made you laugh. Okay, I laugh too, now, thinking back to the image of me laying flat on my back, fists in the air, screaming up at the sky. If I was really thinking about it I would have done like one of those rigid-body fish flops for emphasis. Except I was not entirely sure I didn’t have like a broken collar bone or something.

    @Ian
    Dood, stay with the clipless. You’ll get the hang of them soon. Just get into the habit of unclipping (but keeping your foot on the pedal) when you sense that things are coming to a standstill. Always unclip your upper pedal/foot. And I agree, although a hidden hole in the grass is far more hilarious than some gravel and dirt on asphalt, it’s not really your fault.

    @ Luke
    Yeah, palms full of gravel is not a laughing matter (but apparently a chin bounce is. Hmmm. :) I’m not sure I’m going to take your advice and be more careful in the future, but I’m certainly going to be more thoughtful. Ha.

    Seriously, thanks all for sharing your thoughts. It’s good to know that my fall(s) are(were) not as funny or as embarrassing as you guys’ mishaps. I’ll use that knowledge to maintain my self esteem in future rides.
    ;-)

    Ok, good call on thoughtful vs careful. But yeah, that beard bounce makes for an interesting image :)

    I’ve come off on a gravel patch before and the most painful bit is the stinging palms! I have since invested in a good set of gloves, its no fun picking stones out of your hands!

    “I’m ready to be done with this little run of bad luck (or is it ineptitude?) and to get back to normality.”

    See, that’s just the type of attitude that is going to have you eating gravel again. Once you accept that you’re going to come off a trail with multiple bruises and scrape wounds, that’s when you stop falling friend =)

    “My buddy came around the corner just after to find me on my back with my fists in the air, shouting, “Really!?” at the cycling Fates.”

    Lol!I’m not sure why, but that image has me totally cracking up here. I think its because I can picture your buddy’s puzzled look as he watches you question the sky.

    I would say “be more careful”, but that doesn’t sound like its really an option!
